Maximum number of lights on a circuit

Hi.

I understand the maximum load on a domestic lighting circuit fitted with a 6amp mcb is 1200w or 12 X 100w bulbs. Does this mean I could run a maximum of 24 50w mains downlights on this circuit?

Also I am wanting to run about 10 50w mains downlights off one dimmer switch, would a 600watt switch be fine?

10 light fittings per circuit I was told once as a rule of thumb, assuming 100W fittings

As long as the total loading of the circuit does not exceed the maximum rating of the fuse or MCB then it will be fine. As you are allowed to apply diversity on lighting circuits meanng they will not all be on at the same time. Mains voltage halogens normally state that ehe dimmer needs to be over rated for use with them so a 600w dimmer should be fine for your needs.
