W98 wasnt one of MS bests effort, if any of them are ::b
Not sure I fully understand what you are asking but I would go for a re-build. i.e. backup your data, re-initialise your drive and install XP then put your data back.

Amazon.co.uk are selling XP OEM for new build (not upgrade) for about £55. Thats about the cheapest I've found when I updated my wifes pc a couple of weeks ago.

It's cheap but could be a waste of money if your system isn't up to it. Can you answer my previous question?

You won't be able to run Windows XP on a really old system mate just to let you know.

You will need at least the following I'd imagine:-
P2 300mhz, 128mb ram, 2GB h/drive, etc.

£55 to £89 is the average price I have seen Windows XP being sold for.
