bonus

Post by panlid »

started a big kitchen today and part of it was to remove all the floor tiles. about 30m2. wasnt looking forward to it but i had noticed that the grout was cracking slightly and some sounded hollow, so as i say i was hopeful.

beyond my wildest dreams. the tiles had been laid onto hard board that was laid, not fixed, on top of quarry tiles. had it all up in 1/2 an hour and spotless quarry's. the customer said her husband did it when they bought the house a couple of years earlier. there was lino down before. that would explain the hardboard.

i know i said some grout was cracking but i was amazed at how good the tiles had stayed considering the shocking way they were laid onto unfixed hardboard. dont think ill worry as much from now on when i am laying tiles onto a good solid floor.

I think they were lucky to be honest!

You would expect tiling onto hardboard to create lots of problems, when I have used it in the past to line a floor it has always buckled and warped, even when laying it down wet?

I started a Bathroom today, the wall tiles just fell off, no bolster required just the claw of my hammer, the existing adhesive then scraped off the plastered walls to leave a decent wall.

Then I got the shocker, she wants natural stone tiles laid in a sequence with four different tiles, I thought things were going too well!!

eeerrrr, i thought it was a bonus. decided today to lift the second layer of tiles to get the levels of the room better. then discovered 15mm thick tiles under that that were laid onto the conc. slab.
sod it. the whole lot came up. i now have a 2 part primer for the floor and it is getting latexed screeded to sort it out.
at least i know it will be totally flat when i tile as she has huge tiles going down. wilol post pics when done.

hope you have a skip, that sounds like a lot of rubbish!

Good going, though taking both layers up!

I know often wall tiles pull off the plaster with them, Bstyle was lucky...

I've seen tiles fall off, leaving the adhesive, which has then been a pain to get off!

it just gets worse. needed 8 bags of screed to level this floor in the end. she keeps adding stuff to the job. next job customer is texting me to see when i am starting. now the customer turns up with the floor tiles today...........travetine

i am already strugling for time and she turns up with them., ill have to seal them first, then every cut will have to be wet cut and they are 600 x 300.

cant believe i am going to be working weekend on it then staight onto a 5 week refurb without a day off.

and i get calls of john and woody mid afternoon saying they are at home  ::b

Lay them raw then seal them once fitted, before grouting.

If you seal first it traps the moisture from the adhesive in the stone and takes 3 or so days to dry out instead of overnight.

And use white adhesive.
