Cracks in walls

Post by ouch! »

I'm a little concerned about possible subsidence or heave, but am confused by what I see. I had an engineer around to look at the house a couple of years back and he thought all was OK from looking at the outside and most of the inside. However, he missed a couple of cracks, because I hadn't seem them myself. Both are in the mortar between breeze blocks, one in the garage (attached to the house) and the other in the loft.

Basically the breeze blocks have moved apart by 1-2mm, and the separation has occured along the mortar (not through the blocks). The movement in the garage is along the wall that is hared with the house.

What I find odd is that I can't see any cracks on the outside wall of the house where the loft crack is, or inside the house on the other side of the wall shared with the garage (admittedly I haven't taken the paper off yet). How can this be?
