Black damp patches on bottom of kitchen wall

Post by alison1971 »

Hi
i have just bought a house in need of renovation, i have a house repairer on the job, but i am doing as many jobs as i can do myself, partially to save dosh, part because i like doing it - though if i have any hesitation on a job, i wouldnt tackle it - as a bit of knowledge is very dangerous.

Now, i have many jobs that need doing, one of which is a black damp patch on the bottom of the kitchen wall - its on the internal side of an external wall....the patch is approx 20ins wide, and black, I know its damp, what i don't know is what type of damp, and how to treat it - any advice and suggestions please?
I am absolutely ready to pay a professional to treat it, i just want to know what caused the damp, type of damp and how it should be tackled etc

Thanks
Alison

Hi Alison,

A picture would be helpful.

Also are there any drains or rain water pipes on the other side of the wall?

Are there any signs of rising damp in any of the other rooms in the house?

Is the floor damp next to the wall, below the lino?

Is it next to an external door or chimney breast?

What type of wall is it? Cavity/solid?
