the van seems to drop out of warp in 5th but only when its not under load, say at 41mph in a 40? just when it feels like it, no bang or clunk just the revs go up and drive is lost then a shuffle back into 4th and back again will have it back in gear for another couple of hundred yards or even a mile?
even did it in 4th today?
astra van 97 with a gm engine...
does anybody know the position to set the selector rods and what gear to put it in to set em?
or is it just knackered?

All my advice should be taken with a rather large pinch of salt, all the gear, absolutely no idea whatsoever ;)

Had the same once on a marina van. Just worn shafts - selector shafts? Mine had done over 150,000 miles. if you gently pull back on the gearstick in 4th (or push forward in 5th) then go from accelerating to slowing down on the engine or vice versa does the gearstick move significantly? Mine did, several inches indicating the above. Best, cheapest fix a new (second hand) gearbox.
