It makes it easier to start in cold weather.

Turn the key and wait a while and it should go out, then you can start her up.

The glow plugs help for cold weather starting. When one of them is dodgy it will put a warning light on. You may need to get the plugs checked.

I changed a set of glow plugs on my Vauxhall Combo van a few years back. I can't remember it being difficult and they were only a few quid each.

Usually an easy job for someone with some common and a a decent tool kit.

Can be a bit fiddly getting to them on some engines though.

Replace the set, not just one. Probably about £25 for a set

Is the light flashing while you drive or does it just come on before you start the engine?

If the latter its normal

If the former then some VAG cars and vans use the preheater light "flashing" as a engine management fault warning light. If so you need to have the ecu scanned for the fault.

Good luck
