Water dripping through wall after bad winds and rains, HELP

Post by toki »

Hi there,
Bought our house less than a year ago and have had quite a few issues of water penetration. The house is a barn converted about 2 years ago.
Basically this morning, woke up to the sound of water dripping in the bathroom. When I got up, there was a large amount of water of the window sil. I since put a bowl who got filled up very quickly.
Then I realised the same problem has happened in the bedroom, but to a lesser extent.
We are facing West and we have had horrendous storm coming in our drection with very large amounts of rain.
As I went to inspect the outside, nothing seemed wrong with the window frame seal however there are little crack on the rendering above the window. It looks like somehow the water is coming through those little cracks. However I am quite surprised as we have thick stone walls under the rendering. What do you think? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am absotlutely gutted. (my first home!)
Thanks a lot...

Hi Toki,

Please post some external pictures. I am guessing if it is a barn conversion that the windows have been retro fitted and not very well by the sound of it.

Hi there,
Thanks for the reply. I will try and get some pictures asap.
Basically, the widow frames are slightly on the inside (about 5-10 cm in the inside) and on the outside, there is a wooden "lintel" (not sure if it is the term) just above the frame. It looks fine there that's what makes me thinks the water comes throught the wall just above the window where there are hailines cracks. The weather has really been pushing the rain toward our front wall and I have a feeling, we may need to weatherproof the whole house.
Will get my husband to take some pictures so we will post them later on.
Thanks a lot
