D-Link wireless router problem

Post by Handy Angie »

I have a desktop PC that is connected via a modem to NTL/virgin, it normally connects at 100mbps or something. I have a wireless router for the laptop and now I cannot connect to the internet via the wireless router and so I have had to bypass it, but now I can't use my laptop obviously!

When I tried to connect through the laptop it said something about an IP address issue or something.

Any advice would be welcome

Thanks

The router needs to be identified to Virgin. Once thats done anything that connects via the router will be fine as Virgin only sees the address of the router. It may be that you have registered your desktop only.

Plug your router into Virgin and plug your desktop into the back of the router via ethernet cable then go to this site https://autoreg.autoregister.net/ and enter your Virgin details and that should be it. From then on anything connected via router should work

For Virgin problems, whether its phone, TV or internet try using this forum CableHell - useful guys and some actually work for CS at Virgin. Other than that good old 151 (from Virgin phone) will help as it could be some of your machines network settings.

You're getting the ip address conflict message. Every device inside a network needs a unique ip address. Two on yours are getting the same address.

Do this on both your computers:

Go to Start > My Computer > My Network Places > View Network connections.

On the desktop
Right-click the Local Area Network Conection and select Properties.

In the little box, under This connection uses the following items: scroll down to TCP/IP and double-click on it.

Make sure it's selected to Obtain ip address automatically

On the laptop
Right-click the Wireless Network Conection and select Properties.

In the little box, under This connection uses the following items: scroll down to TCP/IP and double-click on it.

Make sure it's selected to Obtain ip address automatically

Click OK on the boxes and try again.

It sounds simple, but so many miss it.

Turn of the Virgin/NTL modem, Turn off the router.
Wait 20 seconds
Turn on the Modem. Wait for all the flashing lights to stop flashing.
Turn on the router. Wait for all the flashing lights to stop flashing.
Boot the laptop. If the laptop can see the router, it should be able to see the NTL network.
As RichieP says above though, your network settings need to be set to automatically get an IP from a DNS server (Which is done by NTL)
