Kitchen cabinet lighting

Post by awood22 »

Hello I am installing low voltage cabinet lighting but not sure how to connect to mains. I was hoping to replace an existing 1 gang light switch that switches an oustide light and replace it with a 2 gang so I can use the second switch for the new cabinet lights? Can I do this and can the power come from this switch too? Altenatively there is a fused connection box near which I could use but I would still need a switch.

If you are asking "can you take the Live/Neutral & Earth supply from the switch" then the chances are you won't be able too. Neutrals are not wired to switches but on the odd occasion you might find that somebody has done so to feed the outside light.
you will need to drop the switch away from the wall and see if there are a couple of black (or blue) wires in a connector block.
if you are simply wishing to change the plate for a 2-gang switch and link a live over to the other side for the cabinet lights, then yes you should be able to do that.

are you sure that the 13A SFCU is not being used for something else at the moment?
If not and this becomes your preferred way, make sure you remove the 13Amp fuse inside and place a 2-3Amp one in for your cabinet lights. there are also switches that are designed to fit under your cabinets next to the pelmet, if that gives you another option.
