As the title suggests I am about to start ceramic tiling in the bathroom which has wooden flooring over which is sound laminate. Is it ok to merely fix the tiles over the laminate - ? - if not why not ?

why leave it down anyway ? simply to take up, whats the subfloor?

I wanted to leave it down cos its in good condition and would provide a sound smooth surface upon which to lay the tiles. The sub floor is ordinary floorboards, which are not as flat as the existing top laminate.

I'm very tempted to leave the laminate - what is the likely consequence if any of that

Adhesive might not stick to the plastic surface very well. The laminate is floating, so the tiles will also float, and the movement may well stress the tiles, as the tiles surface will be closer to the skirting than the expansion gap of the laminate. The laminate will have insulation under it, so laminate/insulation will have movement, which will also result in the grout/adhesive failing.

You take laminate up, and replace with cement board or ply screwed down, then tile on that. Doing anything that includes the laminate will just be a daft thing to do.

the cement based board is very easy to put down, it can be cut with a stanley knife and tiles adher well to it.

Your laminate will be ruined anyway

the laminate is what is known as "FLOATING" therefore is deflects when you walk on it! when tiled floors deflect they debond and lift therefore they dont stay down!
as someone else said remove the laminate then lay 6m hardibacker or equivalent, then tile to that!

Do it right first time.........and your'll have no problems.

Take up laminate......over board floorboards........tile. using flexible cement and flexi grout.

If you tile over laminate....you WILL have problems.

As an experiment I applied some tile adhesive (for wood) on the laminate 48 hrs ago and it has set and stuck to the laminate well and took a bit of shifting to remove it so I guess your therory of it not adhereing to the laminate is not correct !

FFS, thats why I put 'might', as I havent been stupid enough to think about putting tiles on laminate. It may stick now, but as everyone else on this thread (apart from you) says, it will fail.

I presume your being an April fool?

Well if you tried it and it stuck I'd say go for it

you have been givin THE CORRECT advise on this forum and other forum regarding on what you propose to do...
