New bathroom........Handyman not paid!!!!

Post by royaloakcarpentry »

Haven't a clue what exactly this 'handyman' was handy at. I only use the term handyman because this is what he called himself, I think unhandyman would be more fitting.

Everything he did in this bathroom was wrong, poor standard. The whole lot needed ripping out and doing again. He skimmed the ceiling and to be honest a 6 week course plasterer could have done better. Then painted the ceiling without mist coating first. Walls skimmed badly. he tried to fill them too and then painted over filler without rubbing down.

All framework was held together with metal plates, overboarded in hardboard, skimmed and then tiled.

Absolutely no support for the bath apart from a 2x2 batten rested on a pipe!!!!!

Shower valve, tap manifolds for bath and basin were very loose and could be shaken!! instead of back plate elbow and M/F for connection of shower, he just used a flexi hose from shower valve and used lots of silicone to stick to wall. Pipes that were plastered into the wall were void of protection. He also had joints in pipework instead of bending one length so that joints weren't in wall and plastered over.

Basin was fixed pi55ed. Chrome waste was used but instead of running the chrome into the boxing in, he joined it to white outside of the boxing.

He had no comprehension of aesthetics, levels, plumbness.

Put new floorbaords down with gripfill.

Tiling was terrible, setting out was poor. Tiled straight onto floorbaords, which lasted a week.

caused three flood and was very lucky not to have a fourth.

These are just a few of the pics.........will put pics in the showcase gallery when I have finished doing it properly.

Client hasn't paid him a penny.

Yeah, but it is in the mirror and so aswell as being in the background, it is in the foreground......how spooky is that.

True to form...that work done so badly was completed by a foreign national!!

The galvanised is for the rainwater from the flat roof.

He scalded himself when he took rad off to fit the the towel rail....it is a one pipe system, central heating is done by the estate lol. Plumber that does a lot of work on the estate gave him a diagram of how to plumb towel rail in and he still did it wrong. Towel rail is now done correctly so that if they turn it off, the other rads in the house work.

He certainly liked a flexi fitting.

People that do work to that standard and get paid for it should be banned from ever doing it again.

It saddens me when people do work so poor and get paid for it :cb

Handyman......No the shower screen isn't falling off the wall, that is just where his tiling isn't flat ha ha. Haven't got a clue how he did the silicone, it wasn't even as neat as some bodger who has run his finger or thumb along it. he put the bloody stuff on everything, even all behind the wall unit!!!!!!

My sentiments exactly, Speed.

Problem was that they were at work all day and moved out for some of it. Then you can add the fact that they are clueless about anything construction wise apart from what the end product should look like. By the end, it was too late.

Thing that gets me is that he came home one night and tried to criticise a bit of my tiling, which he thought was 'wonky'. Well that was until I put my 4ft level up the wall with the bubble bang in the middle and tiles touching it all the way along.........he back tracked then pmsl.

I am subbing on this one, but feel sure he is going to try to get money off to compensate himself for all the new tiles he had to buy again. Three other companys walked away, didn't even want the hassle of putting it right.

Depends what you call a handyman, I've worked with some very good allrounders and quite often they're the best choice for this sort of multi trade work.

Of course sometimes they aren't

Diyguys.................stack is behind the boxing and 4'' for rainwater from flat roof. Both have doglegs in them, hence why top is built out further. Although even that he cocked up with bad foresight. He had 25mm tile cuts between the part that juts out and the window reveal??!!! I have made that part of boxing 25mm deeper so it is flush with reveal.

I don't think there is anything wrong in using a handyman for that type of work, although I don't think of a handyman being beyond changing a plug, hanging curtains or mowing the lawn. If you are good enough to be pumping out quality bathrooms then I would have preferred the term of multi-trade. call me old fashioned, and certainly not meant as an insult to people who class themselves as handyman rather than mutli-trade.

In this case he wasn't handy at anything lol.

When I do this type of work, that is all I am at the end of the day....multi-trade, even though I have my City & Guilds in carpentry/joinery. Same story again when I fit kitchens.
