Drilling Allen key
Is there any way of drilling a 3mm hole through an 8mm Allen key ? I want to adapt one to use at work.

Re: Drilling Allen key
It might be possible to drill into a cheapy set, but top quality ones probably not......

Re: Drilling Allen key
You can drill a hole through the centre by putting the twist drill in a vice and the allen key in a drill chuck. Rotating the work instead of the twist drill will keep it drilling through the centre of the work.

Re: Drilling Allen key
Unfortunately the bits that BA mentioned aren't what I had in mind - thanks anyway BA.
The hole needs to go right through the Allen key so that a roll pin can go through.
Hitch - I hadn't thought about trying a cheap Allen key. Thanks for the idea, I'll give it a go.

Re: Drilling Allen key
What I am attempting to do is make a two-in-one tool for work.
I need an 8mm Allen key and a 8mm socket for making adjustments on machinery. Rather than keep going back to the tool barrow I can keep this in my pocket.
I have managed to carefully grind one end of the Allen key to accept the 1/4 inch drive of the socket. My intention was to drill through both the socket and the Allen key together and the put a roll-pin through. The socket won't be a problem as I have done that before. I may have to try epoxy resin if I cannot drill through the Allen key

Re: Drilling Allen key
Ahhhh!, i see! not that way!
Know anyone with a welder?, just get is glued on, it wouldnt need to be very strong if youve ground the square on it.
Got a few special sockets kicking around that have been done like that. I dont see why an allen key wouldnt weld. Tig with a stainless filler wire i normally go for.
