Afternoon all,
I have a question regarding garden decking that I hope you can help me with....
It's the first time we have had decking and are looking to do a small area of 2.8m x 3.9m, I went to our local wood merchant today and he has quoted me £240 for the decking panels and the timber framing. However, the decking is pine!
I have been told by numerous people to stay clear of pine as you can almost watch it rot ?? Should I look elsewhere ? I'm told that Redwood is pretty good stuff ?
I should mention that the guy was doing the above at trade prices becuase I was also getting 47sqm of turf.
Any help, tips and ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris.

'Redwood' is Scandanavian pine!
When specifying timber for outdoor applications, go for either a naturally durable hardwood or a softwood that has been made highly durable through an industrial wood protection process.
Hardwoods (cedar, mahogany etc) wil cost a LOT more. A good quality pine, properly treated, will be ok.

Don't take it personally......

Make sure you use pressure treated timber for everything outside.
If its not pressure treated you WILL be able to watch it rot.
Pressure treated timber has a greenish tinge to it.
Ive just done 2 decks in my garden n used products from a company called Arbordeck from my local timber yard.
There were cheaper options but I want them to last and their quality is good.

Re: Decking query !
agree with above. most 'Tanalised' deck boards in pine carrry a 10 year guarantee (Provided cut end grains are treated)
I put in decking (B&Q, Treated) 12 years back. 1 or two boards are now starting to look a bit iffy, but only where the large pots were standing..
