[Newbie] Would anyone take on a challenge for me? (Paid)

Post by Ashev »

Hi All,

I'm very new here, so I apologise if I am stepping on any toes regarding this post.

I'm in the process of converting a car from a normal petrol engine into an all electric car. Quite a big job I admit, but I can cope with most of it, apart from a small bit of fabrication I need done. I'm willing to pay for this work, but as I only need one piece machined (well, 2, but one of each) none of the local companies I've approached is willing to entertain me.

In simple terms, I need 2 pieces made, 1 out of 1" thick alu sheet, which will allow me to bolt the electric motor I have to the gearbox housing, and the other (out of steel or equivalent) is a taper lock coupler for the gearbox splined shaft to the motors keyed shaft).

I would love to be able to make them myself, however I a) don't have the skills or b) the space for the tools even though I want to learn! (Living in a flat in london..)

My question:

Does anyone here feel like they would like to help me out? I can provide cad drawings of similar products other people have made. And I am more than happy to pay or donate for the bits to be made - And I hope I'm not completely unrealistic with how much I think it'll cost - I'm thinking hundreds rather than tens!

Or

Have I asked in completely the wrong place? Can anyone give me some pointers as to where the right place to ask this kind of question / request (be it this forum, or another elsewhere).

Many thanks

Try bearingboys.co.uk for the taper lock...
The ally mounting, is it a plate that bolts on a bell housing?

Hi Hitch,

I'll get in contact with Bearingboys.co.uk and explain what I am seeking - thanks for the link!

The adapter plate is exactly as you described, a plate to bolt onto the bell housing of the gearbox (where the clutch plate usually lives, but I've got rid of all of that) with a hole pattern to also bolt the motor on from the other (inside) side. I have plans that other people have used, but as I explained I don't have any tooling facilities.

Shouldn't 11 be pronounced "tentyone"?

Cheers

If it were steel, i might have been able to help, i have access to machines to cut 50mm+ thicjk steel, but not aluminium.

Have a look into getting the adaptor water jet cut, should be pretty easy if you can supply a cad drawings.

Where abouts are you based, i might be able to reccomend someone, especially if you are in the south- west.

Hi

I'm based in london, but surprisingly there appears to be a complete lack of small metalworking shops anywhere (or possibly I simply don't know where to look!)

Kind regards

Ashev,

Meta Supermarkets, there's one in Park Royal NW10, they will help if they can't actually do the job.

Using the cars normal gearbox will not be sucessful you will struggle to fix the motor to the input shaft with a drive coupling because of the gearbox splines. Also the gearbox may need a front bearing support if the car had a spiggot bearing in the crank and the gearbox has only one bearing on the input shaft. Mabe getting a flywheel machined up and using the clutch cover and drive plate would be the answer even if the clutch is not needed.
What motor are you using and whats the HP and max rpm?

Hi james.

Thanks for you input, and although you have some valid points, I know they are all reasonably easy to get around. I personally know people who have done conversions and they didn't suffer too many issues.

The motor is probably over specced for the weight of the car, coming in at 40kw nominal and 5600 rpm max.

Cheers
