laying turf for the first time.....

Post by Chrispy »

Afternoon all,

I'm wondering if someone could give me a 'laying turf for dummies' guide !!

I am splitting my garden into 2, a 3rd is going to be decking and I will have an area of 49sqm for new turf.

The area I want to turf is slightly raised at the back and was once a mixture of bushes and patio, I spent the past couple of weeks removing the bushes and lifting all the patio.

What is my next course of action ?

The patio area has left behind a dry mixture of sand and sement that i was worried about laying the turf on ??

From what I can gather (reading other posts), my next moves are -

Hire a rotivator to break up the ground
Rake the area flat
Roll the area
Rake the area again
(not sure if I have to roll again or leave loose?)
Then I can lay my turf on top of this ??

I pressume it would be best to get the decking down once the garden is level and before I start laying turf ?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Chris. :withstupid:

once you've raked it for the second time just make sure its nice and level then you could put down a pre-seed fertilizer just to encourage faster take and growth

put the per-seeder down about 3-4 days before you lay the turf

once you've laid the turf then roll it a couple of times mate so itmakes good contact with the ground below!

And make sure it's well watered for the first week or 2..if dry the roots will look to the surface for nutrition...if damp/moist but not too wet then the roots will go down further
