Pre turfing ferilizer

Post by oldbrit »

Waiting for turf to be delivered on Friday and I have put in fresh topsoil and trodden it down and have a fine tilth. Now I read that I should be putting 'pre turfing fertilizer' in the top soil. Tried all the local garden centers and diy stores and believe it or not there is nothing of that name on the shelves. One helpful chap said to use ordinary bonemeal but I was wondering, is this going to be okay? What is the composition of preturf fertilizer and is there a generally known different name for this? Whilst still in question mode - should the topsoil be lightly watered before laying the turf because with this lovely sun it is now looking rather dusty, or is afterwards the way to go. Thanks

Don't add any more fertiliser. Unless there's a supplier out there who is doing things differently, all the new turf I have laid in the last 10 years has arrived with so much fertiliser in it that the grass will race skyward faster than you can say, "that will need mowing tomorrow."
Pre-seed fertiliser is essential in most lawn seeding situations but I think anyone who markets a pre-turf fertiliser is only likely to be seen (very briefly) on Dragon's Den.
