Buying Tools from the internet?

Post by wf9 »

When you are buying tools from the internet does the cost of the delivery put you off?

On ebay for example the standard cost seems to be about a tenner but most online shops seem to have a deal on, free carriage over a certain amount for example.

Just a query becasue the people who I get my tools from have just reduced their rates. :thumbright:

It depends how cheap the tools are in the first place.

If a tool is £99.99 from one supplier with free delivery but is £98.99 + delivery from another supplier then I would choose the cheapest, which is the one with free delivery.

If sellers on ebay use the royal mail then delivery charges will be much higher than if they use couriers.

I once bought a load of SDS drills for the competition prizes as they were cheap ( I got free delivery to my address), but when I had to post them on the postage on them was very high ( about £9.00 ) I would of been better off buying them one by one and having them shipped directly to the competition winners, which is what I now do!

I buy the majority of my competition prizes from http://www.screwfix.com/ as you get free delivery over £50

If I could find another firm that had the same tools at the same overall price I would be interested, but all the ones that I have seen are much more expensive.

handyman i use powertools2u for pretty much the same reason.

Great customer service and if they've not got it in stock usually delivered within a couple of days. They've just put free delivery on all orders over £100 too, which is what sparked me to start this thread.[/list]

I think something as small as a delivery charge is really physcological in influencing a buying decision on the net.. I might find someone who's £5 cheaper than the next competitor but has £5 delivery on top.. but the next competitor is £5 more but free delivery.. i'd go for the one with free delivery even though they work out exactly the same cos it feels like you're getting a better deal! Or is that just me being strange?

Why don't you go to your local Home Depot or Lowes? Not trying to be smart, but seriosuly, why not??? They have all the tools you can imagine and they are affordable! Or are you looking for something even cheaper?
I'd personally wanna' stick with some good quality tools that are guaranteed for LIFE.

One thing about buying on ebay is that you never really know the true price of for what it costed to ship an item. Sellers on Ebay are always supplementing purchase prices into their shipping in order to make a profit. That way I say that I you probably better off going to Home Depot or etc.

I think you'll find that the shipping costs are often inflated to counter the extortionate ebay and paypal costs that are involved in selling something through eBay!!
