MOT

Post by thescruff »

Had the MOT done today :thumbright:

He picked up on the satnav being stuck on the windscreen and took it off before he could pass it.
Windscreen has a sticker or other obstruction encroaching into the sweep area by more than 40mm outside zone A (8.3.1e)
:wtf: it's always been there, can anyone explain zone A, and where can you stick legally.

The answer is in the question....the sweep area is the area cleared by the wiper blades..

Includes all items affecting the driver's view of the road: the condition of the windscreen, the wipers and washers.

Chips or cracks in the windscreen directly in front of the driver, in the area swept by the wiper blades, are acceptable if they are less than 10mm in diameter. In the rest of the swept area, up to 40mm diameter damage is acceptable.

Official stickers (any used in connection with road enforcement, security or crime prevention matters) that are not readily removable are only a reason for rejection if they restrict the driver's view.

Washers and wipers

operation
extent of area swept by the wipers
condition of the wiper blades.

Sorry copy a nd paste didn't work ...zone A is approx 290mm wide right in front of the driver...10mm max damage or intrusion in this area...40mm rule applies outside zone A, in the area swept by the wipers..

Probably hidden behind all the other clutter that stopped you seeing through the windscreen to drive.

Another case of officialdom taking over.

Fer christ sake..... the tester must have known that the very second you left the place the GPS would be stuck back! Talk about petty!

Serves you right!!

You put everyone in danger by sticking the satnav in that position :angryfire:

Next time make sure you use a fully qualified Part W installer and check his credentials with the regulatory body.

They sometimes get it right too. My van 'failed' it's MOT on emissions and wiper blades (plus two bulbs). Fortunately I noticed they'd tested my van as a 'turbo' version when it's not (seems it makes a big difference when it comes to emissions) and when I pointed this out they said 'sorry' and that they would re-emission test it and let me fit wipers/bulbs while they were at it.

Passed the emissions test and total cost was only £68 :huray:

VOSA are sending many cars in for MOT's and checking the testers to see if they follow the rules properly; the rules lack common sense.

so it could be the guy just doesn't want to take chances with anyone he doesn't know?

I always have a full service at the same time, and to be perfectly honest, I prefer them to do the job 100% as it gives you confidence in the vehicle, just it would be nice to know what the rules and regs for the test are, possibly 99% are breaking one minor infringement or the other.

I think there's a wide margin beyond a 'fine line' between identifying a vehicle that is obviously dangerous and one that has issues that are 'irrelevant'.

Yes, the GPS may indeed be 'illegal' but this is nothing compared to dodgy brakes (for example). TBH if the testing stations checked brakes, lights, suspension and tyres the vehicle should simply pass/fail. Any other issues should be made aware to the owner and left for them to rectify as they see fit.

Lets face it, an MOT is only valid on the day it's done - thereafter the vehicle could go to rat sh1t the very next day - but still be considered 'legal' as far as having an MOT is concerned. :wtf:

You can preserve the anniversary date by having it tested up to one month in advance, for example mine runs out in July 2010, and the new MOT, expires in July 2011.

the jalopy's last MOT, all i needed was 2 side light bulbs :huray:
the soupdragon's car on the other hand needed welding to the sills & a few other bits & bobs :cb
fords used to be cheap for bits but when i had to get rear wheel bearings for a mondeo estate they were £100 per side as they are a hub assy

pfffft....

'modern' vehicles suffer worse. My van requires a new throttle position indicator - this is basically a potentiometer and typical 'pots' cost £1.99 from Maplin (not that the Maplin one will fit though.... ::b ).

I was quoted £197 for the one for my van........ :wtf:

It must be the size of 10 10p pieces stacked together and weigh 50 grams.. :cussing: :cussing:

the jalopy is a 96 shitroen zx dismal with 140,000 miles on the clock, bought for £600 2 years ago & still chugging away but needs a service next month which i can do myself, timing belt could also do with getting done but where do you draw the line? if i stick a new timing belt on then it'll need a new tensioner & 9/10 it'll need a new water pump, it's also going to need tyres soon too  . it all mounts up & all of a sudden the repairs cost more than the car
