Some gems from my gaff.
This is where you can post pictures of extremely poor workmanship, whether it is done by a dodgy tradesman or by an incompetent DIY'er. Instructions on how to post pictures can be found in here.

Some gems from my gaff.
My house was wired, plumbed and extended by the previous owner. There are hundred of dodgy photos, here's a handful of his handiwork.

- Under the raised (tongue and groove on ply) floor was a mixture of surfaces at different heights, concrete, old garden patio (as per photo) and good old garden soil!

- The raised floor in the extension should have raised alarm bells...

- Yes, in the stud wall there's the old kitchen window - still in place - as was the door jam.

- The is the supply to the outbuilding, it is supplied by a long flex off the upstairs ring main, it runs through the ceiling, then down a wall under the raised floor with the joists and boards straight on top of it. there are two cables coming out of the switch, they go to two extension leads to supply power to a tumble dryer and sockets in the BATHROOM.

- What's this under the raised floor?

- Ah, a open drain (I wonder why there were rodent problems?) the top pipe exits through the wall out to the roof guttering! The other is the old bath drain.

Re: Some gems from my gaff.
The 25m of cable to the outbuilding runs through the flower beds about an inch below soil height. Bare in mind there was no earth bonding at all in this house and all the rewireable fuses were fitted with 30amp fuse wire. The sockets in the living room were wired with 5 amp lighting cable.

What..I've always used paper clips in place of the fuse in those old fuse boards...if that failed replace with a nail..OhmMyDog wrote:The 25m of cable to the outbuilding runs through the flower beds about an inch below soil height. And what did the surveyor say when you were buying the place?

Re: Some gems from my gaff.
I feel sorry for you, wouldn't it be better to rebuild the whole house?
I do admire you for carrying the work out though. I look forward to seeing pics when you've redone it all. Makes me shudder, thinking people actually do this! (What the previous owner did!)
Good luck.

Good luck.
