Wood burning Fires/stoves

Post by thescruff »

I copied this from a post made by Agile on another forum and thought it worth posting here as a timely reminder for DIYers.

This is from the HVP magazine and shows what can happen when a DIY installation does not obtains the relevant approvals !

DIYer gets pocket burned

A homeowner has been fined thousands of pounds after illegally installing a woodburning stove.

Paul Taylor pleaded guilty to breaching building regulations relating to the installation. He admitted he was not registered with HETAS (Heating Equipment Testing & Approval Scheme) and that he had not applied to Charnwood Borough Council for a Building Notice for the work.

The flue was fitted incorrectly and was in direct contact with timber and plastic in the eaves of the property, a bungalow.

Taylor was ordered by Loughborough Magistrates Court to pay £4,323 in fines and costs.

HETAS chief executive Bruce Allen said: “This case highlights the potential dangers of DIY installation. Thankfully, no-one was injured on this occasion.”

all though the hetas bit is a red herring in the same way as part p can be complied with by the buildings regs and certification route not requireing proffesional instalation

Hei, "thescruff"
What an amusing fella you are, we've been bowling Googlies in West Yorks for years, but not sure what they've got to do with house burning.
Still.
Thanks for the URL.

Poor flue installation may have contributed towards Loughborough fire
Filed under: Flue Liners (Woodburners) — Tags: Flue Liners (Woodburners) — admin @ 2:00 pm

An incorrectly installed flue was among the problems that led to a blaze in Loughborough, caused by a bodged DIY job, it has been revealed.

Paul Taylor was fined by Loughborough Magistrates Court after admitting five breaches to building regulations when installing a wood burning device and flue appliances at his bungalow.

Charnwood Borough Council's David Slater explained: "Not only did this man lose his home, he has also had to pay out a lot of money in fines because he didn't carry out the work properly or with the necessary permissions.

"It is absolutely essential, from a public safety point of view, that people use experts to carry out such work."

Failure to properly maintain chimneys may have been the cause of a recent spate of blazes in Wiltshire.

The Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service has been called to seven incidents since the start of August, and is warning homeowners to ensure that their chimneys are properly maintained.

One of the reasons for posting in the first place was to make our readers aware of just how dangerous wood burners etc can be when fitted DIY.

Apart from the fire aspect there's a real danger from Carbon monoxide killing the occupants.

It's amazing how many people I come across that don't believe that CO can be produced by burning other things than gas :angryfire:

Oil and wood are much worse than gas.

Thanks to you both.
CO is a KILLER, and a silent one. You breath it; you stand up; you drop down dead.
It's the Carboxyhemoglobin ===>> treacle thick blood.
Just some "Stuff" from WikiP, et al:
"good" - air with less than 9 parts per million (ppm) of carbon monoxide (CO),
"fair" - air with between 9 and 15 ppm, and
"poor" - air with greater than 15 ppm CO.
undiluted cigarette smoke contains about 30,000 ppm of CO,
undiluted warm car exhaust about 7,000 ppm, and
chimney of a home wood fire about 5,000 ppm.
During World War II, carbon monoxide was used to keep motor vehicles running in parts of the world where gasoline was scarce. External charcoal or wood burners were fitted, and the carbon monoxide produced by gasification was piped to a carburetor. The carbon monoxide produced by this process is known as wood gas.
