screwfix Drill Bit Set & Case 45 Pc

Post by ultimatehandyman »

I recently purchased one of these sets from screwfix, just so that I could leave it in the van for emergencies. Often I will be somewhere and will not have the correct size drill bits and so I thought this would be ideal.

I have to say that I am not impressed with it as it is downright dangerous.

A few hours back I was drilling some angle iron on some railings and two of the drill bits broke and almost hit me

Obviously I have had drill bits break before, but this was scary and could of easily resulted in the loss of an eye, the bit almost exploded

You can see the broken bits in the attached picture.

The bits are also very hard to remove from the case as there is not enough room between each drill bit to get your finger and thumb in to lift them out.

Next time I am paying more and getting a quality set of drill bits, I have learnt my lesson!

i never buy sets like these, they look good value but the quality is usually poor. router cutters are the same.

i only use a handful of different size drill bits, so i just get a small number of good quality bits.

e.g. i use a 6mm bosch multidrill bit (£5) for 90% of the masonry drilling i do, i use a bosch 18mm spade bit and 20mm MAD bit for bigger holes in wood, and i have about 5 different sizes of good quality wood bits. this does the vast majority of what i need to drill.

It was raining and glasses and rain make it hard to see.

I soon put them on afterwards though

I must admit, I very rarely wear eye protection when drilling but if I ever used pound shop drill bits again I will definately wear them

You can often tell how good a drill bit is jost by looking at it!

Cheap bitsare pretty useless for drilling metals, especially in a pistol drill.

Sometimes cheap ones are good enough if you sharpen them properly before you use them

I have a few sets of SF drillbits, that have been reasonable (ones in the index tins)

I got a 121 piece combo set from B&Q.

Just had to drill out a flat-head screw where one bit of the head had snapped off - one of the drill bits broke, which is fair enough sometimes, but another one shattered and bits of it flew everywhere !

Cheap crap is dangerous!
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

They are probably the exact same make of drill bits.

Won't be long till someone gets hurt using those bits, might have to tell Kingfisher before someone gets hurt!

Up to now your post on SF hasn't been modded, but I'm sure it will be ASAP when they finally see it!
