Air conditioner installation help

Post by saf270179 »

Hi everyone, Im new to this forum and would like to akk for some help if possible.

Im not a handyman of any type but need to know how to install an air conditioner.

Its a floor standing one.

I have the 5 inch tube pipe thing. Thing is I need to make a hole in the wall for it.

Ive read a post from this site that i found trying to do searches to find out how to do this. It shows a drill with a 5 inch thing on the end to make a hole for the air con tube to go to the outside.

I am on the upstairs floor and wish to do it from inside to outside. Is that possible.

The other thig is i dont want insect to have the opportunity to getinsde as well. Will the vent on the ouside be sufficient for this.

Also i have no idea what tools ared needed or where to get the 5 inch round thing that makes the hole.

I know a carpenter who can help me, but he doesnt know where to get the 5 inch round thing either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

it's not cheap to buy it as a one off though, do you know a plumber or builder, they might come and drill it for you for less than the price of buying one alternatively hire one with a decent drill!!
silicone your tube in plase on the inside and on the outside maybe use one of these........

yes you want a 5" core drill, you can hire them for about £50 for the day including the drill to go with it. You can drill the hole from the inside but it will make a lot of dust

If you haven't bought the air conditioner yet, consider a split unit.

The hole in the wall is far smaller, plus you don't have the condenser fan operating in the room, only a small evapourator fan, so it's much less noisy. Most have a heat pump option, so you can use it for heating in the winter with typically 300% efficiency.

I tried to vent a tumble drier a few weeks ago using a core drill, I don't know what the hell the bricks were made from but it would not touch them, I ended up knocking out a couple of bricks and patching it up that way! :?

Thank you so much guys

I at least now have a rough idea what track i need to be on

Will that drill bit (the one the link is supplied to) go into a normal drill?

I saw the holes through walls page this morning, thats what led me to this site, it just didnt saw what the bits were or where to get them from.

Unfortunately the split unit is not an option as I already have an air con unit. Its a Gree KYD32. Its for a bedroom that has a few computers in so gets very stuffy especially as the LCD monitor gives off an enormous amount of heat.

Also Im ona first floor and there no space outside for the other half of the split unit.

Thanks for the advice though.

someone else may correct me but i think you will need an sds drill.
also you will need a cluch on your drill because if it snags then it is likeley to break your wrist and/or throw you off your ladder!!!
be careful!!

Most dedicated hand held core drills seem to come with a standard keyed chuck to take a hex arbor.
They are also geared lower than normal drills, providing much more torque.

Although you could get away with a good normall drill on smaller holes, i would say you'd be better off with the correct gear. 8-)

there are two types

hex as you have shown dj which fit into a standard keyed chuck as they have on dedicated core drills and

http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro ... 3&id=10297

which fit a standard SDS drill

the sds bits are weaker, I have snapped one before.

You need a drill with a clutch on it

You must make sure that hammer action is turned off when using it

to just drill the hole should take no more than an hour, I would want £30 for doing it.
