Hi Dave,

welcome to the forum!

You are better off spending a little extra and buying decent gear to begin with rather than cheap stuff.

Irwin, marples and stanley make some good woodworking hand tools.

If you are looking for a drill then get a good one such as a Makita or Bosch.

Look out for special offers like this-

http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro ... 1&ts=06035

That is a steal at that price- and no I am not on commision to screwfix lol

I'm sure some of the pro's will add to this

Welcome to the forum Dave....

There must be some essentials, like a saw, hammer, screwdrivers, square, chisels...

The big question though, is how much do you want to spend on it all, and what sort of carpentry

SFX have a general purpose toolset that is described as being 1/2 the seperates price. don't know how good the kit in it is, but seems ok to me and if someone has NO tools, contains quite a few essentials

Forge Steel Tool Set In Bag 22Pc
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Hey Worsley947,

It depends on what you want to do with the kit. There are so many types of carpenter out there? 1st fix, 2nd fix, joiner, framer, shopfitter, shutter, finisher, dryliner, cabinet maker, fitter, scratcher and mincer the list is endless!!! LOL

The typical basic kit all of them share is roughly the following (plus the my top choice):

Tapemeasure - Stanley Powerlock classic
Try Square - Marples
Vernier calipers - Hmmm German ones are the best!!
Pencils - Square carpenters pencils
Hammer - Estwing
Mallet and Clubhammer - Estwing
Chisels - Marlpes Slitproof or Bahco sets
Sharpening - Trend Diamond Fastrack
Plane (Block and Jack) - Stanley or Veritas
Jack Saw - Irwin Jack or Bahco
Tenon Saw = Spear & Jackson or Bahco
Knife - Stanley Titan
Level - Stabila
Clamps - Irwin Quick Grip
Clips - Snips - Pliers - Shears - Cutters
Chalkline - Stanley or Irwin
Centre Punch - Pin push - Drill bits - Augers - Spade bits - Forstners
Driver bits - Wiha or Wera
And a nice comfy tool belt.

Power tool wise, a good battery drill is a start. Jigsaw and then a Circ Saw (commonly called a Skil Saw).

IMO, American and German made tools are the best!
