how to install waste pipe past a door

Post by Alistair86 »

evening all :thumbleft:

Sometimes I come accross the following issue, and no idea on if/how it can be overcome. I'll try my best to explain lol

In this particular kitchen, there is a main wall. It has a window towards the left of the wall, through which the rear yard can be seen. Just before the other end of the wall, there is the external door to get in and out of the house. If you open the door, stick your head out, and look right, there is a drain. So in a nutshell, if stood on the inside, there is a window... big run of wall... exterior door, short run of wall, and where the wall ends, is where the drain is (obv on the outside of the property).

The question is, if the customer wants the sink positioned under the window, is it even possible to do that due to the waste pipe. If the waste pipe was to run straight out the back of the unit which the sink is sitting in, straight out the wall, then:

a) there would be a long run of pipe all the way to the drain, which in my opinion looks s**t
b) more importantly, it would run across the void for the door, which renders that impossible.

My only other guess, with my limited knowledge, is to run the waste pipe under the floorboards right the way along the length of the wall, past the door, core a hole out right at the end, and elbow it out at that point into the drain. The problem with that is:

a) all the work involved
b) it must weaken the floor
c) I don't know if its possible to get enough of a decline along that stretch
d) can't think of a d but there must be one lol

Either I'm missing a trick, or it's just a problem situation.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers :salute:

It's a problem which should be solved when the kitchen is planned, that's what architects and planners get paid for, if the waste won't go under the floor (maybe right under the joists) and if the sink can't go anywhere else then move the gully, (the drain outside). Just my opinion.
One day it will all be firewood.

Exactly what I thought, cheers.

I actually accompanied one of my colleagues on a kitchen measurement, and pointed the problem out, but the customer was adamant that it could be done so it left me a bit confused lol.

Would need to see photos to see if its possible or not. Every property is different.

Would need to know which way. the joists run, how high is the back door, how high is the gully.

Failing that, use a wireless waste.

lol colour republic...

id imagine moving the gulley would be a lot easier. be a bit of a nightmare if a blockage was to occur witht he waste pipe under the floor.

what about the appliances? where do they drain to? dishwasher, washing machine?

possible to run a 4 inch pipe to where the sink is and link that up to the drains outside?

Thanks, didn't think of that. :thumbleft:

they only appliance they want is a washing machine. That's not an issue becuase it will be situated on the wall that is at a right angle to the long wall, so the waste just goes along the back of that run of units, straight out into the drain. The main problem with this one is the external door.

I think your right, removing the drain is the best way.

There are many options, all with costs involved. If those costs are too high there is always a saniflow... always call them saniflows but it would be a sanivite you'd want in that situation.

mechanical drainage is always prefered but if no option then use pumped
