New Floor - How long before tiling

Post by garyc »

Hi

Having a new conservatory built on to the kitchen and also moved the utility room. The conservatory and utility both have a new concrete floor. I want to tile right through with travertine tiles and electric under floor heating.

My question is how long should I wait before tiling the conservatoy and utility (I plan to use a self levelling compound, then 10mm insulation boards, then the heating cables, then the tiles).

Thanks

Gary

Hi Gary,

I am assuming that the concrete base was put down before the conservatory was built, is this correct?

If so how long has the concrete base been laid?

Concrete normally dries at about 1 inch per month, so if your slab is 6 inches deep, it may take 6 months before it is totally dry!

Hi

At the moment the area is still part of the garden and the floor will be laid at the same time as the conservatory is built.

Would your recommendation be to wait six months prior to laying the tiles?

No, I was just saying that it normally takes a month per inch to dry out fully. Mudster will be able to advise you better on how long to leave it before tiling, Hopefully

As UHM says it depends on how thick the concrete is, but an inch a month is about right, especially this time of the year.

If it isn't down now you'll ne be able to lay flooring until well into the new year.
