Lawn to gravel for parking
Post by JacksDaddy »
Hi, first time post here. I have a small lawned area to the front of the house that I'd like to gravel and place a car on. Firstly, I guess the gravel will need re-inforcing somehow to hold a car. I was considering getting a few local quotes but wondered if anyone had completed a task like this themselves and could offer any thoughts or advice? Not afraid of a bit of hard work.
Thanks
Thanks

A good solution in this instance might be to use matting http://www.groundprotection.co.uk/grass ... tecta.html It is a good way of preserving the green aspect, giving a sound hard standing for a car and allowing rain water to pass through. Win all around

Thanks both, really like the idea of the matting and could make the job quite straight-forward. I had a quick look on eBay and a few online dealers. Wondering if the unbranded stuff is just as good?
Thanks again

Yes, I am sure that it does not vary much in quality. That link is purely to show what I was talking about. A friend of mine laid it on his front garden for occasional parking and he scraped back the area and then fed the sifted soil back into the matting with grass seed. It worked a treat and you cannot see the mat now unless you really look. You also see instances of where the mat is filled with gravel. This clearly beefs it up as the gravel helps spread the load but it is still water permeable. In this situation a membrane is a good idea to prevent weed and grass growth coming through.

I think you've solved my problem. I was looking at the fixing packs too and seems really straight forward to fit. Brilliant! Thanks again I'm definitely going to invest in some of this

I would still ask the building inspector first. Plus assuming you have one you'll need the kirb lowered, as its against the law to drive over or on a raised pavement.

Cheers scruff, yeah I was considering this. The lawn area, once dealt with, will be accessible from our drive so may not necessarily need to look at getting the kerb lowered at first. I've no idea how much the council will charge for this work so will definitely have to enquire

They'll more than likely ok it anyway but best to ask, several in our village had to re-instate the front garden.

You do down here, planning permission required and the council have to do the lowering, job takes them less than an hour, the cost all in is £3000 plus VAT.thescruff wrote:Depending where you are you may need planning and the kerb lowering
