Two-way switch but two-way job!

Post by zeitgeist »

Hi there

I have a 2-way switch for the stairs. I noticed a little while ago that when I turned on the upstairs switch, it would make a buzzing sound and the light would flicker. After a while, the switch would also get hot.

Now, I can only switch on the the light at any one switch only if the other switch is first flicked up or down. I have to keep remembering to ensure that it's the bottom switch that allows me to turn the light on every night othewise, up the stairs with my torch to flick the upstairs switch and down the stairs and turn the light on at the bottom switch, hence the "2-way job"

Your help would be appreciated, thanks.

I would replace the switch that was getting hot with a new one, that should fix your problem.

Make a note of which wires came from where before removing the old one, this makes fitting the new one much easier

If it was getting hot it sounds more like a loose connection. Chances are the switch would have been damaged anyway

Hi Sparky

It was actually a loose connection but fortunately the switch is still in working order. I thought I had tightened all the screws but had missed one.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Cheers
