Fake grass

Post by caravan72 »

Hi folks, I'm in the process of making an area for a hot tub and it is also a sun trap so I have laid sharp sand and plan to cover this with fake grass, could anyone recommend any plastic grass for this area.

Thanks in advance

From what I have seen the cheaper ones look like a greengrocers display, there was a house opposite my uncle's that had it done and it looked terribly artificial. The better more expensive types are quite realistic This is not much help I feel

One thing is plastic grass isn’t very good for the environment

It’s plastic

It doesn’t fix carbon

It's not totally maintenance free either. It needs regular cleaning to prevent the build up of dirt and debris where weeds will grow. Still at least it doesn't need a electric or petrol mower.
As to the the choice of the grass itself i can only give my own limited experiences of putting some down for a customer. He was a landlord and got it discounted as an end of roll type of deal and was a mid range product from what he was saying. There did seem to be a distinct nap or lie of the blades which showed up as i had to use the offcut from the length to make up the width . The off cut was clearly "pointing" 90degrees to the main section. I'm not sure if that stands for all fake grass but something to bear in mind.

Regarding maintenance, since it will be sitting there 24/7 it will collect all sorts of things, (Dust, dead insects, seeds, more dust) you may want to consider buying a vacuum cleaner just to clean it. (First time I saw it being vacuum cleaned I nearly died laughing, but it really is the best way to keep it clean, and if you have any pets, dont let them wee on it.

But the methane production is out of this world

There are websites that do free samples, the likes of wickes and B&Q have large samples you can look at, but shop around as it can get into £70+ a meter

As above the cheap stuff looks like it comes from a greengrocers but there are cost effective, decent looking ones.

I got some from grass direct, abut £11/m2 Looks reasonably good. Think it was 'California'

They do free samples too, which was handy. I was worried i'd end up with a greengrocers matt too.

They have artificial grass, with samples to see, but as they were all sitting on on top of the other they all looked the same.

But my point being there is different quality available.

Fake grass

Post by London mike 61 »

When we went to the London grand designs exhibition our friends bought some fake grass from a stall there that had a lot of various qualities available to choose from. There is another grand designs exhibition coming up in Birmingham in October and I dare say the same exhibitors will be there so if you are not desperate time wise then it’s worth a visit.
Actually the grand designs exhibition was so much better than the ideal home one, they had more interesting products and services whereas the ideal home exhibition had nail polishing stalls and the like to help fill up the venue :wtf:

Hi there, been looking at the fake grass in B&Q they have one for £15 a metre, I agree with the green grocer type they have for £7 a metre! most of them have hard looking plastic ridges, just wondering what would be the best tool to cut it as my tub area has 2 curves, garden pruner's (can't spell the right name for them) might be the tool to use to help shape it.

Thanks for all the input so far. my house is as efficient as I can get it, been advising about in energy efficiency for the last 28 years, I think I could expand my carbon footprint and not lose any sleep.

I'm a south paw, so I thought pruners would be better for me without resorting to getting left handed scissors although if there are ones designed to suit either or I would get a pair.
