Post by carhartt kid »

Hi.

Just want to know what preparation you have to make to attach grout to Ply, Its waterproof marine ply so I presume I have to do some kind of keying and paint on a prepapration of some kind????

Just not sure what though!!!

Thanks, Si

Mudster will tell you that marine ply is not the best surface to tile onto as it expands and contracts, so tile backer board is best.

However I used marine ply a few years ago and I just pva'd it and then tiled over it. Since reading mudsters advice I will never use PVA, unless the adhesvie manufacturers specify it.

Get the adhesive, which will need to be flexible as you are tiling onto wood and then get the primer that they specify. (if they specify one )

Marine ply should not really need a primer as it is not absorbant!

Just stick them on with waterproof tile adhesive that is suitable for wooden floors, you should not have a problem with them.

I usually just key the surface with a criss-cross patter with a stanley knife and then prime the timber with a 1-5 PVA-Water mix. Its worked fine before but read a few posts on the forum and thought i'd ask???
