You'll find that you can leave the windows open just a crack and still lock them!

Like gadget says, you can normally open double glazed windpws slightly and lock them in the vent position.

I'm not sure if you can retro fit vents to existing windows or if they have to be manufactured with them in already.

thanks for the advise anyway lads and i'll give this ventilation crack a go,hopefully i know within a couple of weeks.

You can get vents that you fit to wooden and pvc windows-
