Fire Safety
Fire safety is crucial in houses of multiple occupation, people living in these circumstances are ten times more likely to die in a fire than those who live in ordinary owner/occupied properties. Most people die in fires by smoke inhalation and poisoning, not from fire itself.
There are three key principles involved in such fire protection works:
Contain the fire in the room where it breaks out. This is why doors have to be of half hour fire resistance with self-closures. Doors must fit snugly and the door furniture must function properly. An integrated mains connected smoke alarm system.
It is also important that communal areas and hallways have:
Emergency lighting to common parts is recommended and when installed must be fused separately from the existing lighting circuit and on a battery back up.
Fire doors installed that are self closing, with three hinges and supplied with a combined heat and smoke seal to the sides of the door and the top.
