10 wires, 4 holes...

Post by Dan&sarah »

Have wired a few basic switches but come across a bit of a mix that I don't know where to begin. Have tried to get in contact with a couple.of electricians to do the job but all fully booked. I'm capable of following instructions (sometimes) so hoping someone can help

I have attached 2 pictures. One of the current 2 gang 2 way wiring

and the other of the socket I wish to fit. The black from.the 2 core and outside light blue are joined.

There is a 4 core wire to an outside light on left and 4 core to a 2 way landing light on right. I am unsure of the 2 core routing.

The switch I am fitting has L(A) L1, L2 and B.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

That is a 2 gang 2 way smart switch. It is not compatible with what you have. You would be better off installing a smart lamp.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

Could you explain why in layman's terms? It may explain why I couldn't figure it out though. Haha. The switch is sold as a 2 gang 2 way switch.

And thank you

They do not "speak" the same language.

to wire that type of switch you need to have a master switch and a slave switch, you can utilize the existing wiring

https://ilumos.com/pages/2-way-wiring

your current switch is 2 gang - 1 gang is 2 way and the other gang is 1 way

the switch you have purchased is 1 gang 2 way by the looks of it

Nope, it's definately the 2 gang 2 way I bought. I have the slave switch which is the same without the L2.

Two way wiring with standard switches can use two main methods to wire them, one needs a connector in the back box the other does not, so this

is the preferred method, but this

will work.

However with electronic switches the first method seems to be used, but the com wire does not carry 230 volt but a signal from the slave switch, so one has to follow the wiring diagram which comes with the electronic switch.

Also counting wires on original it seems you have two gang, and on new either it is only one gang, or it is using wireless connection to the slave, I was surprised not to see a wiring diagram on web site at first. but it did say:-

"Note: I LumoS 2 Way Switches can only work with another I LumoS 2 Way Switch and will not work with Mechanical Switches. I LumoS 2 Way Dimmer switch must be connected to another I LumoS 2 Way Dimmer Switch. A 2 Way Dimmer cannot work with a 2 Way On/Off by design. All I LumoS 2 Way Switches can also be used as an intermediate switch to create a 3 Way and 4 Way system. Please refer to the 2 Way and 3 Way Technical Support page for further assistance with wiring and operation."

On hunting further I did find the wiring diagram and it shows only 2 wires go switch to switch, not three as with mechanical switches.

Do you have a pic of the front of the switch

your current switch

The 2 way circuit is (C) yellow, (L1) blue and (L2) Yellow

The 1 way circuit Is (C) 2x red, (L1) single Red

what wires do you have at the other switch as you have a twin and earth and 2 triple and earth cables

Thank you all for your help. I have an electrician lined up for in a couple of weeks if I can't figure it out. I don't like giving up though. Haha

The current switch is just a typical 2 switch.

The front of the I lumos is

The other switch is below. The right hand side is the same light

It gets even more complex as you have another 2 way circuit

L is your common live, L1 and B is the 2 way

L2 is your 1 way circuit

All fitted and working well. For anyone having issues in the future these require a light fitting to actually be wired up. They seem to check for load via the electronics in the switch. Took us a while to figure that out.

The triac/mosfet needs a load to operate as it uses a common live between 3 way, no neutral also makes it more complex
